Escaping your daily routine to hit the slopes is an exhilarating experience. It becomes even more exciting when you can combine the freedom of skiing with the cultural richness and entertainment of a city break.

In a recent trip to Innsbruck, Austria, I discovered a charming city nestled in the heart of the mountains, offering easy access to 13 ski areas that have made it a hotspot for tourists. However, beyond its slopes, Innsbruck has so much more to offer. The city is alive with a vibrant medieval old town that boasts museums, shopping opportunities, fantastic restaurants, and a lively nightlife scene.

Upon landing in the scenic Inn Valley, the breathtaking view of the mountains greets you, marking the start of your adventure. Innsbruck is renowned for its stunning airport approach, making a window seat a must for anyone flying in.

One of the first stops we made was to the Bergisel ski jump station, designed by the talented architect Zaha Hadid. Located 250m above the city, the station has hosted two Winter Olympics and is a training ground for daring ski jumpers. At the top of the ski jump, the SKY restaurant offers panoramic views of Innsbruck, allowing guests to soak in the scenery while enjoying a delightful champagne brunch.

During our stay, we took advantage of the Ski plus City pass, granting access to 291km of slopes across 13 resorts in the area. The pass not only covers skiing but also includes ski buses, public transport, and various attractions, providing a comprehensive experience for visitors of all skill levels.

Innsbruck’s proximity to the mountains is astounding, allowing visitors to explore the city and hit the slopes within minutes. We ventured to resorts like Axamer Lizum and Kuhtai, enjoying a mix of trails amidst stunning mountain backdrops.

If you prefer a break from skiing, Innsbruck offers plenty of attractions, including strolling through the city, visiting landmarks like Kaiser Maximilian’s mausoleum and Ambras Castle, or exploring Swarovski Crystal Worlds for a unique experience.

For food enthusiasts, Innsbruck boasts a diverse culinary scene, ranging from hearty traditional Austrian dishes in the mountains to fine dining with scenic views in the city. After exploring the city, our final skiing adventure at Muttereralm, a family-friendly ski area just 20 minutes from the city, left us feeling rejuvenated and fulfilled before heading home.

Innsbruck truly offers the best of both worlds – an exciting ski destination combined with a rich cultural experience, ensuring a memorable vacation for all types of travelers.
