Deanna, a mother of five, found herself in a difficult situation due to substance abuse problems and an abusive relationship, resulting in her four youngest children being removed from her care. Feeling isolated and trapped in a toxic relationship, Deanna’s life took a positive turn when her case was handled in an innovative manner.

The Family Drugs and Alcohol Court (FDAC), established by the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with partners like Camden Council, played a pivotal role in supporting vulnerable individuals like Deanna during legal proceedings. Instead of focusing solely on punishment, the FDAC provided Deanna with access to psychologists and other forms of support to address the root causes of her challenges.

Through the FDAC, Deanna was offered courses and guidance on setting boundaries, managing emotions healthily, and reflecting on her upbringing. The personal and holistic approach of the FDAC, which involved regular interactions with the same judge and access to specialized professionals, enabled Deanna to make significant progress.

The effectiveness of the FDAC’s approach is evident in the high rate of parents, like Deanna, being reunited with their children – a stark comparison to conventional court systems. Deanna successfully reunited with her children in April of the previous year and expressed gratitude towards the social workers, judge, and FDAC for transforming her life.

Having experienced the positive impact of the FDAC firsthand, Deanna emphasized her newfound sense of optimism and happiness, stating that she is now a different person who is no longer plagued by substance abuse issues. She credited the FDAC for enabling her to envision a brighter future filled with possibilities.

With 15 FDACs serving 36 local authorities in the UK, advocates of the court, including FDAC Judge Kenneth Grant, advocate for its wider implementation across the country to provide more families with the opportunity for positive change and reunification.
