Better Streets for Enfield, a campaign group, has urged Enfield Council to install pedestrian crossings at the junction of Green Lanes, Hedge Lane, and Bourne Hill in Palmers Green. The group noted that while Transport for London (TfL) needs to approve the changes, pedestrians currently face challenges crossing the busy junction, which lacks any signalised crossings. This situation is particularly concerning as the junction serves several bus routes.
A spokesperson from Better Streets emphasized the necessity of pedestrian crossings at the junction, highlighting the proximity of a school, nursery, and churches. This makes it crucial for people of all ages and abilities to be able to cross safely without the fear of cars turning across their path after the traffic lights have changed. The group suggested that pedestrians should be able to cross from corner to corner securely, not only enhancing safety but also promoting the area and reducing reliance on car travel.
Data revealed that out of 29 collisions at the junction in the past decade, six were classified as “serious.” Among the 43 individuals injured in these incidents, four were pedestrians, while the remainder included car drivers, passengers, and a cyclist. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
Enfield Council affirmed its commitment to enhancing pedestrian facilities at the Green Lanes and Hedge Lane junction. The council is spearheading a project to review pedestrian provision at the location, collaborating closely with TfL on potential designs. As TfL manages traffic signal infrastructure in London, their approval will be crucial in determining the next steps for pedestrian safety improvements at the junction.
