Chakana, located in Broadway Market near Regents Canal, is an ideal summer dinner spot. Arriving early, we secured an outdoor table to enjoy the evening. Despite being new to Peruvian cuisine, our visit to Chakana turned out to be exceptional.
We kicked off with classic Peruvian Pisco Sours, which were both refreshing and tangy. Following that, we indulged in Huancaina potatoes topped with Botija olives, a colorful and flavorful delight. The buttery potatoes paired perfectly with the creamy sauce and spiced oil, while the olives added a savory touch.
For mains, we ventured out of our usual choices. My boyfriend opted for the beef causa with crispy yucca and fresh toppings, impressed by both the flavors and presentation. I tried the asparagus causa, finding the potato base pleasantly textured and well-balanced with the toppings.
A standout dish recommended by our waiter was the corn ceviche, featuring a variety of corn types and a flavorful tiger’s milk marinade. Each bite offered a unique blend of textures and flavors that left a lasting impression.
For dessert, my boyfriend enjoyed the Alfajores, while I savored the Picarones in fig leaf syrup, reminiscent of doughnuts but made with squash and sweet potato. Both desserts were delicious, though the Picarones were on the richer side for me.
Overall, our experience at Chakana showcased the richness and diversity of Peruvian cuisine, making it a must-try for all diners. Whether you’re a seasoned Peruvian food enthusiast or a newbie, Chakana promises a memorable dining experience.
