An event honoring those lost under tragic circumstances in Newham successfully took place for the second consecutive year in late 2023. The Table of Love and Loss event brought together friends and families affected by untimely deaths, including incidents such as stabbings, suicide, and domestic abuse. This event was initiated by Ayse Hussein in 2022 to remember her cousin Jan Mustafa, who was tragically killed in Newham.

The December 2023 event marked the second gathering, with Ayse reflecting on the event’s origin as a tribute to her cousin. The event aimed to provide a platform for families to connect and share their experiences. Numerous organizations provided support in various areas, such as domestic abuse, mental health, suicide prevention, and more.

Participants at the Table of Love and Loss were treated to a demonstration by medical trainer Grant Lewis on using bleed control kits to save lives. The event also featured impactful speakers, including Anjim Mouj, Rokhsana Fiaz Obe, and other prominent figures in the community.

Among the organizations present was SAMM, a charity offering support services to those who have lost loved ones due to murder or manslaughter. The CEO, Joanne Early, shared her own experience as a bereaved parent and emphasized the importance of connecting with others who share similar experiences. SAMM’s volunteers, all personally affected by loss, provide unique and empathetic support to those in need.

SAMM, operating for 32 years, offers workshops, pop-up cafes, and individualized support to bereaved individuals. Joanne highlighted the practical assistance SAMM provides during challenging times, such as interactions with social services or court hearings. The organization has seen an increase in demand for its services amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
