In 2023, a tragic crash in Orpington claimed the life of 16-year-old Tafari Thompson-Mintah. Here is an account of what unfolded:
Tafari Thompson-Mintah lost his life while riding his moped on Sevenoaks Way on Monday, October 9, around 3:30 pm. Reports suggest that he was intentionally struck by a red Mercedes car, causing his moped to collide with an orange Vauxhall Mokka. The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene and abandoned the car nearby. Meanwhile, the driver of the Mokka remained at the scene and received medical attention for shock.
Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe expressed his condolences to Tafari’s family and highlighted the ongoing investigation into the incident, urging witnesses to come forward with any information. Enquiries were swiftly initiated by the police to locate the Mercedes driver.
Subsequently, on Thursday, October 12, Tafari’s family initiated a GoFundMe page to raise funds for his funeral, describing the devastating loss of their son due to a hit-and-run incident. They appealed for financial assistance to give Tafari a dignified burial.
Following the tragedy, Joseph Barnes was arrested on October 12 on suspicion of murder, with Aaron Conway from Orpington and Justin Barton from Neasden Lane also being charged with murder in connection to the case. As of Sunday, October 29, no further updates have been provided on the investigation by Newsquest London.
