Conservatives have acknowledged that an event organized by Mr. Bailey’s mayoral campaign took place at the party’s Westminster headquarters on December 14, 2020, during London’s Tier 2 lockdown. During Tier 2 restrictions, household mixing was prohibited except within support bubbles, and gatherings of no more than six people were allowed outdoors.
Following this event, Mr. Bailey, who failed in his bid to become Mayor of London earlier this year, is facing demands from the Labour group at City Hall to resign from his position as chair of the police and crime committee. Labour London Assembly Member Leonie Cooper has sent a letter to Mr. Bailey, asking for clarification on his attendance at the party.
In the letter, Ms. Cooper stated that Mr. Bailey’s position as chair was untenable and urged him to step down until inquiries are completed. The City Hall Conservatives have been contacted for a response.
A Conservative Party spokesperson disclosed that four members of Mr. Bailey’s campaign team were disciplined for an unauthorized social gathering that took place in December last year, characterized as “raucous.” This revelation has compounded pressure on the government amid accusations of multiple parties being held in December while Covid-related deaths were high and lockdown measures were in place.
The scandal led to the resignation of former Downing Street press secretary Allegra Stratton, who stepped down as a government adviser following the leak of a video showing her joking about a Christmas party.
Despite calls from Labour for a police investigation into an alleged breach of the law at a December 18 party at Downing Street, Scotland Yard has announced that they will not initiate an investigation due to a lack of evidence.
