Starting Tuesday, individuals who refuse to wear a face covering while using public transport or visiting shops may be subject to a fine of £200 or more, as per a recent Government announcement. This decision was prompted by the detection of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the UK, with a handful of cases reported in both England and Scotland.
Although face masks have been mandatory on public transport in London since Covid restrictions were lifted in July, compliance decreased following the removal of legal enforcement. Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed relief at the Government’s reinstatement of compulsory mask-wearing, stating that this measure is crucial in curbing the spread of the virus.
Highlighting the importance of face coverings, Mr. Khan urged residents to maintain vigilance especially with the Omicron variant circulating. The reintroduction of mask mandates is seen as a positive step towards ensuring public safety.
Even though face coverings have been a prerequisite for using Transport for London (TfL) services since July, enforcement has been challenging without legal mechanisms in place. Insufficient compliance has been observed, with only a minimal number of passengers asked to leave TfL services for non-compliance.
Effective immediately, individuals failing to wear masks may face fines starting at £200 for a first offence, escalating to £400 and £800 for subsequent violations. The move to reinstate mandatory mask-wearing has been well-received by Emma Gibson, the director of London TravelWatch, who emphasized the role of face coverings in instilling confidence among commuters.
As Parliament deliberates on proposed amendments to Covid regulations, it is anticipated that the new rules will come into effect early Tuesday morning, emphasizing the importance of adherence to safety measures to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
