London’s annual New Year’s Eve firework display has been called off for the second consecutive year due to uncertainties surrounding the Covid-19 situation. Organizers expressed concerns that the event might face cancellation later if Covid cases surge during the winter season. As a preemptive measure to prevent disappointment among visitors, the decision to cancel has been made now.
The traditional display, usually held along London’s Victoria Embankment, typically draws around 100,000 spectators and is broadcasted to millions on television on New Year’s Eve.
A spokesperson for Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, stated, “This year, London will be celebrating the new year in a magnificent manner, as always. However, due to the ongoing uncertainties related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks display will not take place along the Thames this year.”
Last year’s event was adapted to the pandemic conditions, and this year, various new and exciting alternatives are being explored to mark the New Year’s Eve celebrations in London. More details about this year’s festivities will be revealed in the coming days.
The cancellation decision for this year’s display mirrors the scenario from the previous year when the event was called off in September followed by a lockdown in December across the UK.
